Inside the Fab Four's guitar sound

As a general rule – both at this job and in life – I try not to make broad, sweeping pronouncements. However, I'm quite comfortable with saying that I'm very, very, very far from being the only person for whom The Beatles were a foundational musical influence.

Hearing them at a young age shaped not only my view of music, and what could be done within the confines of a song, but also my idea of what a guitar really sounded like, and everything that it was capable of sounding like when pushed in different directions.

The extraordinary opening chord of A Hard Day’s Night, the yawning feedback that prefaces I Feel Fine, the ripping distortion of Taxman... The Fab Four have been so ubiquitous for so long that it's easy to forget just how much of the modern guitar trail was blazed by them so many years ago.

Today, we dig deep into some of the greatest of those pioneering guitar sounds – what the Beatles used to get them, and the incredible stories of how they were captured on tape. Love the Beatles or not, one can't deny how far ahead of their time they were when it came to the guitar...
