Stone-cold classics, 50 years on
1972 was a banner year for the evolution of rock as we know it. Landmark, game-changing releases from the Stones, Bowie and Deep Purple may be first to emerge from the mental haze, but this was also the year that cemented glam rock, funk rock and, yes, yacht rock in the public consciousness.

For my money, Black Sabbath's Vol. 4 is the must-learn record on our list of the 30 greatest rock guitar albums of 1972, showcasing Tony Iommi's eternally erupting riff geyser at its most brilliantly volatile, but I'm increasingly drawn to the irresistible grooves of Funkadelic's America Eats Its Young. If you can't have fun soloing over those syncopated struts, you'd better take a long, hard look in a (preferably psychedelic) mirror.

We'd wager there are bound to be a few albums in our rundown that have escaped your attention, but all of these releases make for essential listening. Dive in and you'll quickly realize why 1972 was one of the most important years for the shape of guitar to come.
