Ozzy Osbourne on Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen feud: “Randy didn't have a nice thing to say about Eddie – they were rivals”

Editor's Note
A decades-old rivalry, revived
Given they were two of the most influential guitarists of the '80s – and, as it would transpire, all time – Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen were often pitted against each other, whether in bar-room debates or the media. And 40-odd years on, that rivalry has been reignited once again.

A documentary released earlier this year included a clip of Eddie Van Halen asserting "everything [Randy] did he learned from me". Now those comments have found their way to Rhoads' friend and bandleader Ozzy Osbourne, who has shared his own assessment of the situation.

Personally, I'd argue that Rhoads and EVH have distinct qualities that set them apart, regardless of whether one influenced the other. For all the pyrotechnics, Eddie's sense of timing was one of a kind, while Randy's understanding of classical music brought a unique sense of sophistication to his solos.

Whatever your view, they both deserve their positions at the pinnacle of the pantheon of rock guitar – and that's something we can all agree on.
