Wata reveals what inspired the Japanese noise-rock icons to team up with NYC industrial metallers Uniform for an album rich in atmosphere and ambiguity – and how the bands' three total guitarists each found their own space in the mix
“There was no way I was shredding like them – I had to find my space in their universe”: Meet Shubh Saran, the shred chameleon whose jams with Jakub Zytecki and Mark Holcomb helped him find his voice – and left Plini asking, “What the f**k is happening?”

Armed with a Fender John Mayer Strat and a host of diverse musical projects, Saran's guitar approach draws from blink-182 and Allan Holdsworth in equal measure – and his unique solos have blown his shred peers' minds

Dissent is vital right now

We're on the final stretch

There's nothing more dangerous than an establishment consensus. And now, with far-right talking points being conveyor-belted into the mainstream and politicians lobbying to scrap human rights, dissent is more important than ever.

We're heading into an election cycle - and the mainstream media is bereft of leftwing perspective.

But thanks to our supporters we're building something better. Our coverage offers a different lens through which to view the world.

There are millions of people like you who crave nourishing, thoughtful analysis of the world. We need fewer than 1,500 people to strengthen our supporter base as we head into 2024.

Can you support our truthful, independent analysis from just £1 per month?

As part of this year's fundraiser, Aaron and I sat down to share the behind the scenes scoop on the making of Downstream.

In it, we reflect on how the increasing popularity of Downstream shows just how strong an appetite there is for meaningful, leftwing analysis.

In the past 12 months we've published over 40 episodes of Downstream to discuss the most pressing political, economic and cultural issues facing society. They've been watched over 7 million times.  As a whole, our Youtube channel has had over 110 million views.

We've done all this without a single penny of investment that had to be paid back. We've never had seed capital. There are no shareholders expecting a return.

All we have are people who believe in what we do.

We need fewer than 1,500 people to reach our goal and get ready for next year's election mayhem in the way the left deserves. Can you help?

BACK US FROM £1 PER MONTH ➡︎
We mean it when we say we are people-powered. This is only possible because of you.

“Jimmy sat there for the whole two hours, then waited until after the show before he asked me, ‘How did you find out how to make my sound?’” Meet Mr. Jimmy, the Japanese kimono salesman who has dedicated his life to becoming Jimmy Page
(Abramorama)
This is the story of Akio Sakurai, aka Mr. Jimmy, and his lifelong quest to replicate Jimmy Page's guitar style and tone, and perform Led Zeppelin just as Page did back in the day – and, eventually, in front of the man himself
“I thought to myself, ‘Nobody’s done anything with that for at least 25 years. It looks like a piece of medieval torture instrumentation’”: How G7th revolutionized the guitar capo
(G7th Capos)
The British company has sought to give the humble capo a player-friendly future. As with many great ideas, it evolved from a simple question that designer Nick Campling asked himself while playing an acoustic guitar…

“It was a way to kind of memorialize the folks that I lost”: Grieving the death of his grandparents and close friend Joey DeFrancesco, jazz guitar ace Dan Wilson found solace in creating his beautiful new album, Things Eternal
(Shane Wynn)
For this dazzling LP, Wilson recorded a stirring array of covers and originals, all the while channeling the lessons he's learned from George Benson, and approaching the material more like a drummer than a guitarist
