"No matter what, something will invariably go wrong. Your cable breaks, you bust a string, you take a wrong step and slip. Or maybe your singer dances around, steps on your tuner pedal and mutes your guitar. Shit happens." Mind you, the Ibanez-wielding virtuoso wasn't just talking about the band of weekend warriors at your local bar. Even on the biggest of stages, the best-laid plans hatched by even the most seasoned of musicians can sometimes go wrong. Bruce Springsteen – one of rock's most legendary live performers – recently proved that point at an Atlanta concert, when he energetically tossed his Telecaster to his long-time guitar tech, Kevin Buell, at the end of a song (a dramatic move that the pair have executed countless times in the past), only to have it strike Buell right on the head. Springsteen, naturally, went right over to check on Buell afterwards, but his veteran E Street Band kept playing without a hitch, before The Boss returned to signal to end of the tune. Video of the incident is certainly going viral now, but there's a good chance that a significant percentage of the crowd – in the moment – didn't even notice that anything had gone wrong, a good lesson in what Strauss referred to in that same GP interview as "correcting the situation smoothly, like a pro"...
