Led Zeppelin's final ride with John Bonham
On July 7, 1980, Led Zeppelin took the stage at Eissporthalle an der Jafféstraße in Berlin. That evening, they played a loose but formidable 14-song set filled with classics, and a few tunes from their then-fairly recent In Through the Out Door album.

Tragically, that Berlin show would prove to be the band's last ever performance with drummer John Bonham, who passed away on September 25, 1980, after a day of heavy drinking. He was just 32 years old.

I find the recordings from that summer 1980 tour quite fascinating. All too aware that punk and new wave had washed away many of their blues-rock contemporaries of the late '60s and early '70s, Zeppelin were looking to re-invent themselves, and had a renewed sense of purpose.

You can certainly hear that energy in the soundboard recording of that fateful July 7, 1980 show, which is a striking reminder of the band's power, and where they might have gone had Bonham lived.
