Should we join the circus?

Breaking the billionaire grip on media

Four right-wing billionaire families own 75% of Britain's newspapers. Their politics define how issues such as the cost of living crisis, industrial disputes and climate breakdown are presented.

And it's never going to be in favour of a fair society that works for us all.

So, how should the left engage with these outlets? Should we throw ourselves into the circus to contest the space - or should we just leave it alone?

Listen now to our panel discuss how we win ground over billionaire-backed media.

The Panel

Ash Sarkar

Contributing editor at Novara Media, Ash is your host for this discussion. She asks our speakers how we can weaken or even break the billionaire grip on the media, how we build alternative spaces - and why any of this matters if we want to build a society that works for us all.

Aaron Bastani

As co-founder and contributing editor at Novara Media, I provide a run down of the history of the British Media landscape, particularly since the arrival of Rupert Murdoch in 1968. I suggest that while we should be selective in the platforms we engage with, it's almost always better for there to be someone articulating a socialist argument. If socialists don't engage then liberals simply cosplay as the left instead.

Bhaskar Sunkara

Founding editor of Jacobin and current President of The Nation, Bhaskar explains why the UK presently can't have a socialist heading up a centre left publication. He discusses the best way to project and broadcast left populist ideas when we can't rely on politicians.

Hamza M Syed

Co-presenter of The New York Times and Serial's podcast The Trojan Horse Affair, Hamza explains why the left could learn a lot from the right's ability to tell a good story. He calls for the left to pick a simple demand in order to communicate a vision of the world that people can't yet see. Facts are important, but without a wider narrative in which to place them you'll fail to bring people with you.

Dalia Gebrial

Novara Media contributor and academic, Dalia Gebrial, discusses what winning looks like when engaging with the mainstream. She explains how debates as played out in legacy media are fundamentally unfit for purpose when changing public opinion, and calls for more direct action.

Barnaby Raine

Historian Barnaby joins us to explain why mainstream outlets create moral panics. He argues that the left should double down on highlighting issues that people are facing right now, rather than simply provide the leftwing take on Westminster politics.
