He may be hitting headlines more for his zany kitchen covers than his otherworldly guitar playing these days – cop this week's Sunday Lunch take on Limp Bizkit's Nookie, of all things – but Robert Fripp is a true visionary of the instrument.

He took prog into psychedelic realms with King Crimson, pioneered ambient guitar textures with his Frippertronics gear innovations and is the only guitarist we can think of who has insisted on performing behind the backline, an experiment he undertook during his stint on Joe Satriani's G3 tour.

Yet despite his recent YouTube escapades, the guitarist remains something of a reclusive genius. So it was a genuine exclusive to be invited into Fripp HQ to not only discuss the tumultuous times of King Crimson and his meticulous approach to Guitar Craft, but also photograph his guitar collection – including his iconic 1959 triple-pickup Les Paul Custom.

Whatever your favorite Fripp era (I will never tire of his ethereal feedback on Bowie's Heroes and his collaborations with Brian Eno, since you asked), it's a must-read interview: his dedication to his craft is an inspiration to players of all stripes.
