Editor's Note
A landmark year for guitar music
While 1991 was the year grunge entered the mainstream, it could be argued that 1992 sowed the seeds for nu-metal.

Tom Morello's groundbreaking fusion of DJ sonics and Zep-worthy riffs on Rage Against the Machine's debut is the obvious touchstone, but there were other early indicators – none more so than on Ice-T's first foray into metal on Body Count's controversial debut. The mood for guitar revolution was further inflamed by Faith No More's disregard for genre classification on Angel Dust, and Dimebag Darrell's swaggering groove-metal stylings.

Make no mistake, 1992 was a seismic year that set the agenda for the decades that followed, a hypothesis we've explored in our rundown of the best rock guitar albums of 1992. If you've yet to hear any of these landmark releases, we'd recommend remedying that particular malady immediately – we're confident you can trace a throughline to the guitar music you love today.
