Silkworms have been such a vital part of lifestyle in Japan that they are often given an honorific suffix (okaiko-sama) and are counted as 1-tou, 2-tou, the same counter used for livestock like horses and cows, as opposed to 1-piki, 2-hiki, the counter used for bugs and insects.
