A Kyoto Oasis of Books & Coffee

"Silkworms Start Feasting on Mulberry Leaves"
(Microseason 22)

It's the warmth of spring that stimulates silkworm eggs to develop and now is the time that the eggs naturally begin to hatch. The worms awaken with a voracious appetite, and quickly begin feeding on their primary diet of mulberry leaves. In about one month they'll begin producing smooth, white threads. Silkworms have been such a vital part of lifestyle in Japan that they are often given an honorific suffix (okaiko-sama) and are counted as 1-tou, 2-tou, the same counter used for livestock like horses and cows, as opposed to 1-piki, 2-hiki, the counter used for bugs and insects.
