Hugh Cornwell: “I can’t fathom what the attraction is about a relic guitar. It’s battered and beaten up, and suddenly it’s 10 times the price?”

The relic debate rages on
Relic'd guitars are always a polarizing topic in the industry. However, with both Fender and Gibson devoting huge resources to producing artificially aged models, the subject isn't going away anytime soon.

Former Stranglers guitarist Hugh Cornwell, for one, doesn't see the appeal, saying in a new Guitar World interview, “I can’t fathom what the attraction is about a relic guitar. It’s battered and beaten up, and suddenly it’s 10 times the price?”

There are more variables that go into it than that, of course, but the Tele aficionado does make an amusing point.

In the same interview, he also weighs in on another great guitardom debate: would you rather have a cheap guitar and a top-notch amp, or a high-end electric guitar and a cheap amp?

His answers to that great philosophical question – plus his biggest guitar-buying tip – and more can be found in the conversation below.
