Eruption – more than four decades on
It's wild to think that Eruption – voted last year by Guitar World readers as the second greatest guitar solo of all time – almost didn't make it onto Van Halen's self-titled, 1978 debut album.

"Eruption wasn't planned for the record," a young Eddie Van Halen told Guitar Player in a 1978 interview. "Al [Alex Van Halen, the band's drummer and Eddie's brother] and I were picking around rehearsing for a show, and I was warming up with this solo. Ted [Templeman, Van Halen's producer] came in and said, 'It's great, put it on the record.'"

In celebration of the recent 45th anniversary of that fateful recording session, the late guitar hero's son, Wolfgang, posted a video of him playing the solo on his father's iconic Frankenstein guitar to Instagram late last week.

The clip – which you can see here – is a fine tribute to the legacy of the instrumental, which, even four and a half decades later, still stands as a Mount Rushmore-caliber display of mind-boggling guitar virtuosity.
