Editor's Note
The rise of a new generation of guitar hero
You probably don't need us to tell you what an incredible time the 1980s were for the electric guitar. It was a decade of monster, record-breaking albums across the board, a good number of which were powered by earth-shaking, game-changing guitar work.

The alternate tunings, apocalyptic feedback outbursts, and proto-grunge riffage of Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation – my own favorite rock album of the decade – didn't quite make it to our new round-up of the greatest guitar albums of the ’80s, but your favorite LP of the era certainly might have.

Featuring Stevie Ray Vaughan, AC/DC, Slash, and, of course, Eddie Van Halen, the list shines a light on what a significant time period it was for the guitar's evolution, and the incalculable role the instrument played in some of the decade's biggest records.
