What were you playing when you were nine years old?
Way, way back when I was seven years old, my parents insisted I learn a musical instrument, and they let me choose which one. An avid viewer of UK music staple Top of the Pops, I opted for guitar, but was ultimately disappointed that the nylon-string I'd received was a far cry from the screaming solidbodies I'd witnessed on TV. Those dreams were ultimately realized when I obtained a cheap Strat copy in my teens and worked my way through the Blink-182 and Muse discographies.

All of which is to say that I would not have had any hope of tackling 7empest, Tool's 16-minute prog-metal zenith, which was recently covered by nine-year-old Les Paul enthusiast Maya Neelakantan. It's further evidence of how YouTube and tuition apps have sped up the learning process for guitarists around the world – and that 16-minute duration is a real wake-up call for anyone who says kids lack attention spans these days…
