Shrines in the Middle

Hello friends! It's Spoon & Tamago–your source for art & design from Japan. As we approach the end of May, temperatures are beginning to rise! This week we're exploring a curious subset of shrines: those that are situated right in the middle of streets as if unbothered by all the traffic zooming by. We're also excited about new initiative that lets you purchase individual tiles that, until now, were for industrial use and had to be bought in bulk. Lastly, we're checking art designer Tomoe Shinohara's exquisite kimono made from leather scraps.

If you've ever driven in Japan you may have come across an unfamiliar scene: a small shrine right in the middle of the road. Sometimes the road curves to one side to avoid the shrine and give it some space. Other times the shrine rests literally in the middle of the road, unbothered by the passing traffic

Tokyo's Sanja Matsuri was held today. It was the first time in 3 years that the festival wasn't scaled back due to covid.

Incense for the Summer


This summer incense set is inspired by the cool aromas of lush plants that are full of energy and vitality. The set includes several iconic summer leaves like the bamboo leaf and morning glory.

HA KO are a series of elegant, leaf-shaped paper incense that can be enjoyed as potpourri, or burned like traditional incense. The leaves come in different aromas and can be differentiated by their shape.
