Marty Friedman on why streaming listeners are skipping guitar solos: “Solos often have an obligatory existence – they must be there for a deeper reason”

Editor's Note
"Solos often have an obligatory existence – they must be there for a deeper reason"
That's part of what former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman wrote in response to recently-released data that showed that users of streaming services are beginning to skip guitar solos when listening to songs.

Friedman added that even he – a man who's written quite a few memorable guitar solos himself – occasionally skips through a song's lead break, saying, "I can tell in the first opening phrase whether or not I will give a rat's behind what the rest of the solo will be like.”

Finally, the metal great added that guitarists looking to avoid this fate should focus on ensuring that there's just as much reason for their solo to be in a track as its vocals.

Many guitarists we speak to emphasize their desire to play for the song, rather than themselves. This data, we reckon, is a sobering reminder of the importance of doing just that...
