How an alt-rock guitar hero crafts his sound...
When the subject of the great rock guitar tone kings of the '80s and '90s rolls around, one player that seemingly always gets left out of the conversation is Bob Mould.

With Hüsker Dü and then Sugar (not to mention his stellar solo discography), Mould built up an incredibly impressive library of guitar work that continues to – through the countless players he influenced – shape the sound of rock today.

Personally, Pink Turns to Blue the snarling epic that serves as one of the highlights of Hüsker Dü's monumental 1984 double album, Zen Arcade – has one of my favorite guitar tones ever captured on record. 

Mould's modern-day pedalboard is smaller than you might think, and is anchored by a boutique signature distortion unit and a trusty compressor the guitarist says is crucial to controlling his sound in any live setting.
