Zakk Wylde says replicating Dimebag Darrell’s playing style is impossible: “It's like if Randy Rhoads played Eruption, it would sound like Randy, not Eddie Van Halen”

Editor's Note
You'll always sound like yourself in the end...
There are plenty of examples of famous guitarists playing through cheap gear and sounding exactly like themselves.

Zakk Wylde, who's currently gearing up for a tour with the recently reunited Panterasays that that same general truth – that your playing will always ultimately sound like, well, your playing – holds up even when you're performing another guitarist's parts as faithfully as possible.

“It's like if Randy Rhoads were to play Eddie Van Halen's Eruption,” Wylde told Guitar World in a recent interview. “No matter what he did, it would sound like Randy playing, not Eddie. You're never going to mistake Randy for Eddie or Eddie for Randy, and it's the same thing here with me playing Dime's stuff.”

Wylde, however, clarified that he wasn't apprehensive about sounding more like himself than his late friend Dimebag Darrell while onstage with Pantera.

“I am going to go in, learn the parts, be as faithful to what Dime did as possible, and just be me. I'm gonna have fun with it, knowing that I am not expecting myself to sound like Dime, and no one else should either, which is how it is when I play with Ozzy or whatever else.”
