A guitar giant steps away from the road
Earlier this week, guitar titan Mick Mars announced his retirement from touring with Mötley Crüe, a band he's been a part of since their inception in 1981.

Mars has spent decades battling Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S.), a painful degenerative disease that affects the spine, and a statement from his representatives said that his decision stemmed from his no longer being able to "handle the rigors of the road" due to the condition.

After the retirement was announced, I poked around online and found some fan-filmed live footage of Mars ripping his way through a set-closing Kickstart My Heart at the band's September 9 show at Las Vegas's Allegiant Stadium. The gig would turn out to be Mars' last with Mötley Crüe.

Even through what one could only imagine was significant pain, Mars – just as he's done for decades – stands steady, anchoring the song's riff-heavy attack with precision, even amidst the ridiculous stage props, aggressive pyrotechnics, and, in this case, Vince Neil's rather road-worn vocals.

The video – which you can see here, and below – is a testament to the grounding musical skill Mars has brought to one of rock's craziest bands over the last 40+ years.
