A surprise treasure
Margaret Simpson, an 85-year-old resident of New Zealand, recently had a look around her house for anything that might be of value.

Her daughter, Jo, is battling cancer, and the costs of the chemotherapy treatments have been taking a toll on the entire Simpson family's finances.

Margaret soon found a dusty old acoustic guitar that she had purchased from a music teacher 60 years before. She wasn't terribly optimistic about its potential value, but took it to a local vintage instrument dealer anyway.

Little did she know that the guitar – which had sat unnoticed in her house for decades – was an 1870s-era Martin Size 2, Style 34 model, with a custom-fitted ebony bridge, to boot.

“I must confess I never thought [a guitar with] a name like Martin would [be] anything special,” she joked to a local newspaper

It's the kind of story that makes you wonder what other priceless guitars are sitting in attics and closets around the world – gathering dust and forgotten...
