Last Thursday was the autumnal equinox: the official start of fall.  With it brings the time of year when the thunder gods, having been active throughout the summer, settle down to rest. As temperatures fall, dark clouds give way to clearer skies.

The big news last week was that Japan, after 3 long years, is finally reopening its borders to tourism on October 11th. So in anticipation, our newsletter this week is dedicated to highlighting some of our favorite spots in Japan that you might not find in your common guides. Ginzan Onsen

Next is Ginzan Onsen, an achingly photogenic hot spring town in the Yamagata region of Northern Japan. Literally meaning 'silver mountain,' the location became famous for its old-Japan look and feel after it was used for the site of the period drama Oshin.

Japan's sauna craze has progressed to the point of in-home sauna offerings. Just 1.2 million yen ($8500 usd)
Japan's aversion to crust is so extreme they routinely cut off and discard sandwich crust. Now, the imperial hotel has developed crustless bread.   A logical progression as opposed to—oh I don't know—just eating the crust.
