Red Hot Chili Peppers pay tribute to Eddie Van Halen

That's Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis, speaking on the death of the great Eddie Van Halen.

The day after Van Halen's death, the Chili Peppers' bassist, Flea, brought a bassline into rehearsal that had been inspired by the news. The rest of the band soon caught on and, in Kiedis's words, "a song in his honor effortlessly unfolded."

You probably wouldn't expect the Chili Peppers' guitarist, John Frusciante, to melt faces on even a Van Halen tribute with two-hand tapping pyrotechnics, and indeed, Eddie isn't a salute driven by mere imitation.

In its unique way, the song is a stirring tip of the cap, one that helps achieve Frusciante's stated goal of building a bridge in his playing between the technical wizardry of Van Halen and Randy Rhoads and the rawness of guitarists like Greg Ginn and Kurt Cobain. You can check it out here.
