tidbits from all corners of Japan

The 2025 Osaka Expo mascot character was officially unveiled this week. It's name is Myakumyaku and here itis pictured with Japan's Prime Minister (left).

Summer Gift-Giving

As we noted above, it's ochugen (summer gift-giving season) so we've rounded up some of our favorite seasonal gifts that we think your friends and loved ones will enjoy.

Ochugen is derived from the ceremonial day of Taoism on July 15th, a tradition that merged with Buddhism to create what is a show of appreciation to those who helped or supported you during the first half of the year. The beautiful thing is that the emphasis is not on the gift itself, but rather the act of giving. The value of the gift is of less importance than the presentation and thoughtfulness in which it is presented.
