Editor's Note
Who's taking the guitar to the next level?
Steve Vai knows a thing or two about taking the guitar to parts unknown.

As someone who almost singlehandedly re-shaped instrumental guitar music, left his own unique mark on the work of a number of rock legends, and even designed his own instrument, Vai was unafraid to break with well-worn tradition and chart his own path on the guitar.

The five guitarists listed in the feature below not only have chops for days, they – according to Vai – have that same mold-breaking spirit. If they're not already on your radar, they very much should be going forward.
