Editor's Note
Kirk Hammett's cinematic solo debut
Ever since Kirk Hammett announced his first-ever solo release, an EP called Portals, back in February, us GW writers have been curious about what it might sound like.

Was it to be an outlet for Hammett's love of the blues? Given his recent signing with Gibson and affiliation with "Greeny"the legendary Les Paul once owned by blues-rock guitar god Peter Green, and now by Hammett – the timing for such an outing seemed right.

However, Portals' lead single, High Plains Drifter, is no blues-rocker, that's for sure. Nor is it in any way some kind of Metallica throwaway. Instead, it's an amazingly cinematic piece of music that demonstrates the full range of Hammett's skills as a guitarist. Check it out below.
