    Why is this happening?

Platitudes about the Israel-Palestine conflict are countless

Dissecting legacy media's coverage of the war in Gaza, providing verifiable facts and illuminating perspectives that are not voiced in the mainstream has been our focus over the past two weeks.

To help make sense of events outside the frenetic new cycles of Twitter and mainstream media, I wanted to share some resources about the history of Israel-Palestine with you. Why is this happening? When did it start? Who is to blame? And how might it end?

Our journalism is only possible because of readers, viewers and listeners like you. To be ready for next year, we need just 5,000 of you to join our regular supporters and back our work.

If you are in the position to, are you able to join our regular supporters from just £1 per month?

We simply could not do this without you.

    Where to begin?

Platitudes about the Israel-Palestine conflict are countless.

"It's an age-old feud" is a common one, with such a declaration usually followed by the word 'centuries' or even 'millennia'. "People have fought for that land since the Romans" is another. As if the empire of Trajan, or the Medieval Crusades, has anything to do with contemporary forms of nationalism.

Less frequently cited, or understood, is the emergence of Zionism as a 19th century phenomenon, or the unique role played by the British prior to the founding of Israel in 1948. Rarely mentioned is the Arab Uprising of the 1930s, or the fact that one of the most vicious terrorist attacks against British service personnel in the last century was the bombing of the King David Hotel in 1946. Those responsible would go on to play a central role in the founding of Israel.

Below are some vital resources to help expand our understanding of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

    Reading recommendations

The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonial Conquest and Resistance by Rashid Khalidi.

Khalidi starts with the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire in the final years of the First World War, and proceeds to tell the story of the conflict through to 2014.

Whether it's the politics of leading figures within the early Zionist movement, or how serious the great powers were about the Oslo Peace Accords, you'll learn more from a single chapter in this book than entire reading lists elsewhere.

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappe

Pappe is an Israeli historian and political scientist. The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine is a first class account of what Palestinians call the Nakba, and how Israel's 1948 War of Independence involved one of the largest forced migrations in modern history.

Far from being just the result of contingency or opportunism, Pappe highlights how hundreds of thousands of Arabs were displaced as a result of Plan Dalet, an intentional strategy which would now be described as ethnic cleansing. Israel's recent demand for Palestinians to leave North Gaza has been described as a second Nakba - making this book as relevant as ever.
