According to Japan's ancient calendar, this is one of the coldest times of the year. Indeed, many parts of Japan are seeing heavy snowfall right now and much of what is viewable above ground appears frozen. But below ground, unnoticeable to most, it's the time of year when the subterranean natural spring begins to thaw, setting into motion a series of events that eventually leads to spring.

Coming of Age Day

The second Monday of January is a special day for youths across Japan who turn 20. A national holiday in Japan, Coming of Age Day is meant to celebrate those entering adulthood. It's here—the first forecast for cherry blossom season in Japan. The Meteorological Agency predicts Tokyo will see cherry blossoms begin to bloom on March 22 with full bloom on the 30th.
