Uncut gems
It's not often artists openly name their worst record, but Joe Satriani has tarred his self-titled 1984 EP with that particular brush – yet, as I argue, it boasts some of the most inventive playing of his career.

Featuring an Allen key kick drum, nightmarish pick scrapes, and the most uncanny train impression you've ever heard from a guitar (really), the EP shows an experimental side to the king of guitar melodies.

And sometimes it's these rough diamonds that give you the greatest sense of who a guitar player is. The same is true of Dimebag Darrell's Destructional Home Video – a lost private guitar lesson from 2003 that we unearthed to mark 18 years since his untimely passing.

It finds the Pantera icon at home, completely raw and unfiltered, dishing out off-the-cuff licks and quips about why he likens the key of F to having "one too many doubles".

Sure, the finished, polished article is a wonder to behold, but it's these rare insights into our heroes that really help us to understand their genius.
