Alternative reality
While the '80s mainstream's attention was on hair metal and pop excess, a new guitar-led scene was emerging – one that would go on to spearhead the alternative movement of the '90s and introduce a multitude of guitar geniuses in their own right.

'80s indie and alt-rock delivered some of the most exciting, trailblazing guitarists, even by today's standards – just take a look at our rundown of the genre's greatest players. Whether through their use of expansive effects (Robert Smith), jagged art-punk thrashings (Sonic Youth) or off-the-wall solos (Joey Santiago), these players changed our perception of how to approach the instrument.

For my money, Johnny Marr remains the ultimate indie guitar hero. The Smiths man's progressions are rhythmic tapestries, and a wall of sound in their own right.

And that's testament to the one thing these players have in common: an ear for how to make the guitar uniquely theirs, right down to the way they attack a note, voice a chord or effect a part. It's a sense of originality we should all hope to tap into in our own playing.
