Editor's Note
The guitar that launched a thousand bands goes up for sale
I say a thousand, but I think that's a rather conservative estimate.

The release of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit is one of those before-and-after moments in rock history, a complete game-changer of a song that altered the face and sound of popular music forever.

Now, the Lake Placid Blue Fender Competition Mustang that Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain used in the song's equally groundbreaking music video is headed to the auction block.

Given that the heavily-modded Martin D-28E Cobain used for Nirvana’s legendary MTV Unplugged set currently holds the record for being the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction, there's good reason to believe that this humble Mustang could fetch eye-watering, astonishing sums of money.
